Why October is the Best Time to Elope in Big Sur
I’ve photographed elopements in Big Sur across every season. Foggy winter mornings, summer days so clear you can see forever, spring wildflowers tumbling down the cliffs. All of it is beautiful. All of it is Big Sur.
But October? October is different.
There’s something that happens to the California coast in fall that I can’t fully explain — the light gets richer, the air gets cooler, the summer crowds thin out, and Big Sur returns to something closer to what it actually is: one of the most dramatic, soul-stirring landscapes on earth. If you’re considering a Big Sur elopement and you have any flexibility on timing, this is the month I’d point you toward every single time.
What October in Big Sur Actually Looks Like
The summer tourist rush is over. Highway 1 is quieter. The beaches that were packed in July are often completely empty by October. You can stand on the cliffs at Garrapata and feel like the whole coastline belongs to just the two of you.
The light in October is extraordinary — golden and warm in a way that summer never quite manages. The sun sits lower in the sky and hits the cliffs at an angle that makes everything glow. Golden hour lasts longer. The redwoods filter the afternoon light in a way that feels almost cinematic without any effort.
The weather is reliably mild — cool enough for layers in the morning, warm enough by afternoon to be comfortable on the coast. The wind is present but gentler than spring. Fog rolls in and out, sometimes dramatically, which I’ve always loved — there’s something about a misty Big Sur morning that makes vows feel more significant.
And the sunsets. October sunsets on the California coast are something else entirely — the angle of the sun, the way the marine layer catches the light as it drops toward the horizon, the colors that come out in those final twenty minutes. I’ve watched hundreds of sunsets on this coastline and the ones in fall consistently stop me in my tracks. The weather cooperates too — October sits in that sweet spot after the summer fog burns off and before the winter storms roll in. It’s reliably the most stable, most beautiful time of year to be standing on a Big Sur cliff at 6pm watching the sky turn.
The Locations That Come Alive in Fall
Garrapata State Park — the cliffs here are at their most dramatic in October. The golden grasses along the trail, the deep blue ocean below, the light coming in from the south. This is my most requested Big Sur location and fall is when it photographs best.
Pfeiffer Beach — the famous purple sand beach feels genuinely magical in October. Fewer people, the light filtering through the Keyhole Rock at golden hour, the sound of the waves. It never gets old.
McWay Falls — the waterfall that flows directly onto the beach. October light hits it perfectly in the late afternoon and the surrounding canyon glows warm and golden.
The Redwoods — Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and the surrounding forest feel otherworldly in fall. Dappled light through ancient trees, the smell of the earth, complete silence except for the creek. For couples who want something intimate and away from the coast, this is it.
Private venues and inns — Glen Oaks, Treebones, Ventana — October is shoulder season which means slightly better availability and often better rates than peak summer.
Why I Only Do a Small Number of Big Sur Elopements Each October
I’m based in Maui now, which means my Big Sur trips are intentional and limited. I return each October for a small number of elopements — never more than I can give my full attention to — and then I come home.
What that means for you: when you book one of these October dates, you’re not getting a photographer who shoots Big Sur every weekend and is going through the motions. You’re getting someone who has photographed this coastline extensively, knows exactly where to be and when, and is genuinely excited to be there.
I’ve been shooting Big Sur elopements for years. I know which cliff has the best light at 4pm. I know which beach you can actually reach without a permit. I know which section of Highway 1 looks like a painting when the fog rolls in. I know how to build a timeline around the October light so nothing feels rushed and you actually get to be present for the whole day.
What to Know Before You Book
Permits — most of the best Big Sur locations require permits and I handle all of them. You won’t need to touch a government website.
Weather — October in Big Sur is generally reliable but the coast does its own thing. I always build flexibility into the timeline and have backup location options ready. The wind and fog are part of the experience — lean into them.
Timing — I recommend 6 hours minimum for a Big Sur elopement. The drive between locations takes time, the light changes fast, and you don’t want to feel rushed on a coastline this beautiful.
Accommodation — book early. October dates at Ventana, Glen Oaks, and Treebones go fast. If you’re flying in, SFO or Monterey are your closest airports.
